Isaiah 9

His anger will not turn away,
and his hand is stretched out still:
He will fell the fig-tree pride
of unfaithful Israel.
Their kings are a monster’s head,
their prophets a stinging tail.
So God’s anger will not turn away,
and his hand is stretched out still.

Even the orphans lie.
Even the widows kill.
How can he show them mercy?
His hand is stretched out still.

They blacken and bloodstain the land.
They feast and eat their fill.
They devour their own children—
so his hand is stretched out still.

He will bring Assyria forth
to make the people quail.
He will burn and burn and burn
until earth is clean. He will.
His anger cannot turn away,
and his hand is stretched out still.

But look in the shadows—a light!
But look in the desert—a well!
There is a plan to end the fall:
the winter will not fail
to cover every corpse with snow
and ring all war’s death-knell.
For the sake of this salvation,
his hand is stretched out still.

A Child is born to rule us.
A Son is born to build
the Kingdom Incorruptible,
the Peace on Zion’s Hill.
For the sake of this peace he will not turn away.
His hand is stretched out still.
